The Cat Museum in Kuching is the place to go if you are a big fan of all things related to cats. The word 'kuching' is Malay for cat so it is appropriate that the city government should have come up with the idea to have a Cat Museum to celebrate our feline friends. The museum was opened in 1993, covering over 1,000 square metres on the ground floor of the North Kuching City Hall Headquarters Building (DBKU).
There are no live cats in this quirky museum but just a huge collection of 'catabilia' including cat statues, a stuffed clouded leopard and other preserved wild and domestic cats, cat carvings, exhibits relating to cats in art, cat ceramics, cats in history, legend and folklore, Hello Kitty stuff, cats in theatre, movies and literature, handicraft cats, cats in advertising, cat posters, cat behaviour, characteristics and purring, cats in TV commercials, cats around the world, cats in Malay and Chinese society and more.
Here are just a few examples of the hundreds of exhibits you can see at the museum:
Cute painted cat ceramics with portraits of famous cat lovers in the background.
This smiling blue and white ceramic cat is part of the collection of Dr. Betty Jamie Chung, a devoted cat lover from Hong Kong who bequeathed her vast collection of cat artefacts and memorabilia to the museum.
Cat pictures have been used to advertise products for decades.
A painting by Austrian artist Rosina Wachtmeister, renowned as the Cat Artist.
In the 1980's Satoru Tsuda from Japan had the idea of training cats to dress up and pose for TV commercials. This is an example of his work.
I came with low expectations but I enjoyed the visit and found some of the exhibits entertaining and interesting.
